Common Causes of Failures in Pipe Systems

In the installation of pipelines for water supply, water management or any other application, the proper procedure must be followed to ensure optimal efficiency. If the proper procedures are not followed, then there is a risk of systemic failure. Let us look at some of the common causes of failure in pipe installations:

1. Pipe burst: When the pipes are exposed to excessive high pressure over time and the pipe material is not suited to accept the high pressure, this can lead to what is called a pipe burst. If the high pressure is subjected on the pipe for less than a minute and causes the pipe to burst, this is known as short-term failure. This can also occur in plastic pipes and connectors made of PVC if they are tested with compressed air.

2. Long term failure: Pipe failure can also occur over the long term, especially when the pipes are subject to high pressure over a prolonged duration. While this does not always lead to pipe bursts, it can cause the pipe and plastic plumbing pipe connectors to stretch and deform, leading to cracks in the pipeline.

3. Water hammer or surge: In the case of high-pressure surges repeatedly in the pipeline, there can occur what are known as water hammers. Directional fittings from a pipe manufacturing company can degrade under repetitive surges, causing the pipeline to be damaged and affecting their functionality.

4. Cyclic fatigue: If the system pressure is always on the higher end, over time, this can stress the pipes and fittings in the system. In poor quality plastic pipes and fittings, this can affect the tensile strength of the system and lead to cracks, which can cause system breakdowns and pipe bursts if exposed to further high pressure.

5. Pipe freeze: In ordinary plastic pipes such as PVC, pipe freeze can become a cause of concern. Not all plastic pipes are suitable for installation in all weather and altitude conditions and PVC pipes can freeze if installed in low temperature zones. The water entrapped in the pipes can lead to cracks and cause system failures.
